As the world’s temperature rises, it is no surprise that climate defenders are feeling the heat. Climate advocates pushing for a sustainable future are facing grave legal risks around the globe from fossil fuel companies and their government partners desperate to protect and expand their investments.
Farmers, teachers, journalists, scientists, young people, and parents are being harassed, threatened, and sued into silence for their climate activism.
They can’t keep taking the heat for all of us if they aren’t safe. Global Climate Legal Defense (CliDef) is the first organization dedicated exclusively to legally defending climate defenders worldwide. CliDef started in 2022 recognizing that a climate movement under constant legal fire needs lawyers to win, and we cannot afford not to win.
That’s why CliDef offers legal advice, strategy, case coordination, and funds for legal defense and supports a community of diverse lawyers and legal organizations to serve the climate movement. Our model is working in countries including Brazil, Canada, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, France, Mozambique, the Philippines, Uganda, and during major UN climate conferences to keep climate defenders legally secure. And as more governments crack down on those who speak out and speak up for the climate, CliDef will be there to stand up for them in court.
We’ve got climate defenders’ backs. Will you have ours? Thank you for making it possible for us to grow this critical work.

In some instances, for reasons outside of MCF’s control, a contribution may not reach the intended recipient. This may be due to the intended recipient’s loss of federal or state tax-exempt status or other reasons. In such a case, MCF will select another recipient organization based on its sole discretion.
