MOMentum is a guaranteed income demonstration project that MCF launched in May 2021 which provides $1,000 per month to 125 low-income Marin Moms of color with children under 18 for an initial period of two years. The demonstration project is designed to provide support to those in our community who are disproportionately impacted by economic inequities and give them an opportunity for greater independence over their lives, their finances and the future for them and their children.

The participating Moms live in Southern, Central, West and North Marin and were recruited via previous research MCF conducted on a project called The Book of Mom. There is no requirement as to how the $1,000 can be spent - that is at the sole discretion of the Moms. However, we are collecting extensive data throughout the course of the project to understand the impact this money has on the Moms’ lives. To date, the impact has been profound: living conditions have been improved, college applications have been submitted, stress levels have been reduced, and more quality time is being spent with their children.

A donation of any amount will provide support for the moms with services they need: financial aid for education and training, childcare, and short-term emergency assistance. In addition, support will fund advocacy efforts to scale guaranteed income through policy at the local, state, and federal level. Once you donate, you will receive regular updates on the program, so that you can feel confident that your contribution is being put to great use.

MOMentum alone will not solve the problem of economic inequity in Marin county. However, it will provide us with a blueprint from which we can design more and bigger projects in the future. It will provide critical information for policymakers. And, most importantly, we hope it will give 125 members of our community the opportunity to gain more independence over their lives, the ability to feel more financially stable, more time to spend with their children and hope for the future.

Which is what we believe we all deserve.

Should you choose to support this organization or project, your contribution will be made to Marin Community Foundation, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation that is a tax-exempt public charity under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3).

Contributions made via the Donation Center are distributed by MCF to the donor’s intended recipient. In the case of MCF pooled funds, where donations are collected into a single fund and then granted to multiple organizations, MCF receives your donation and distributes the total collected funds to the grantees for that fund. Your contribution may take up to 45 days to be received by MCF and sent to the intended recipient organization. No fees are assessed on any specific donation to or from a fund. The full amount of your contribution to MCF constitutes a charitable contribution that may be tax deductible. Donors should consult their personal tax advisors for any questions regarding tax deductibility based on their personal tax situation.

In some instances, for reasons outside of MCF’s control, a contribution may not reach the intended recipient. This may be due to the intended recipient’s loss of federal or state tax-exempt status or other reasons. In such a case, MCF will select another recipient organization based on its sole discretion.

If you choose to support an organization by visiting their website to donate directly to the organization, Marin Community Foundation does not accept or hold any donation, or receive fees from any donation made directly to another organization.
